Im wanting a new reel for inshore but heavy enough to fish for little blacktips and grouper in florida,i have?

which reel compares with a medium heavy , heavy redbone rod?
i like the penn 460 or 360 slammer but idk?

The 360 would be great for Inshore but too light for Offshore fishing, (period).

The 460 would be a better size for Offshore fishing, but still too light for Grouper/Shark fishing, (and a tad too heavy for general Inshore fishing).

People generally don’t target Grouper & Sharks with Spinning outfit’s. Why??

Grouper live in and around reefs & heavy structure. When a Grouper feels the strike of an angler they immediately swim to the nearest “hole” in the reef to escape. You need a heavy-duty drag system and a heavy-action Offshore rod to keep them from reaching their reef “hidey-holes”. Most spinning reels don’t have enough drag surface or “power” to challenge an Offshore Grouper, (period).

This is not my “opinion”, it’s a fact.

Sharks are another species that require a larger drag surface to subdue, (for obvious reasons).

Can you hook and fight a Grouper/Shark/MONSTER fish with a Penn 460?

YES!

BUT, the odds that you will ever get to SEE what your fighting are slim to none. 75%-100% of the time you will either get spooled or cut-off. OR you will spend 1-2 hours trying to subdue an average sized Offshore fish. (Fighting a large fish beyond 30 minutes is bordering on “work”. Anything AFTER 30 minutes is “grueling torture”, (even for the most enthused angler).

Trust me…….

Obviously, this depends on the SIZE of the Grouper/Shark you are targeting…..

However, you need to understand that LARGE and small fish are not “segregated”……Esp Offshore!

Whats the point of all this?

You need 2 different outfits, (period); a lighter Inshore outfit and a heavier Offshore outfit.

Inshore spinning outfits can be “Bass fishing” sized. But, Offshore spinning outfits need to be BIG. Here are your Offshore options:

1. Penn Slammer 760- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_96639____SearchResults

2. Fin Nor OFS 75- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_89192_151001002_151000000_151001000_151-1-2

3. Daiwa Saltist 6000- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_10204500_151001002_151000000_151001000_151-1-2

4. Penn SSM 750- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_10204500_151001002_151000000_151001000_151-1-2

5. Shimano Spheros 14000- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_103536_151001002_151000000_151001000_151-1-2

Use the above with a good Braided line and a heavy action Offshore rod and you have a MUCH better chance to actually SEE what you’ve hooked into. (Personally, I think the Fin-Nor OFS is a great Offshore reel for the price….)

Hope this helps ya?
