alegebra question word problem?

I am having trouble with this question for alegebra , does anyone know the answer and how it is worked out

a sporting good sales man sells 2 fishing reels and 5 rods for $272. The next day he sells 4 reels and 2 rods for $208. How much does each cost?

Let R be Reels and r be rods ( I hate problems using terms that start with the same letter! )

2 R + 5 r = 272 and 4 R + 2 r = 208 You can substitute or subtract the equations one from the other. I’ll use subtraction.

4 R + 10 r = 544
- 4 R – 2 r = 208
————————-
8 r = 336

r = 42. So each rod costs $42. Now substitute into either equation:

2 R + 5 x 42 = 272

2 R = 272 – 210 = 62

R = 31 so each Reel costs $31

Check : 4 x 31 + 2 x 42 = 124 + 84 = 208 and IT WORKS !!!
