Betta Fish Facts Needed!!?
facts? or myths that most people on here spew…? do some research on what I say and you’ll find out it is correct…
lifespan
wild and in labs – 10yrs
in a filtered heater tank – 7yrs
bowl with water changes once a week – 5yrs
bowl cleaned when it looks dirty – 1-3yrso
best housing
bettas are best in at least 2.5gallons so you can provide them with a heater (7.5watt is the smallest heater). filters are fine, many people have their bettas in their big community tank and the filter causes no trouble. bettas aren’t stupid, if they have trouble swimming near the filter they’ll avoid that area.
temperament
bettas are NOT the cold blooded killers they are made out to be. they are simply territorial towards other bettas like many fish are to fish of the same kind. if you understand how they live in the wild you understand why tihs is in the wild bettas have large territories (many fish share a rice paddy, each male has their own territory in it, and females swim around freely. when a female comes across a male she can breed or swim away. in a tank females can’t get away and there for the male nips as he usually does to start mating because she didn’t swim away except she cant get swim away and when she refuses to mate he’ll attack, she’ll attack back and it won’t be pretty. so males should not be kept together unless being bred. if they do mate, the male attacks the female afterward until she leaves so she doesn’t eat the eggs. so once mating is done she must be removed, as the male cares for the eggs until they hatch. males and males obviously fight over territory. now, this means MOST males or females can be kept with peaceful tropical community fish (no aggressive fish as bettas long fins make them an easy target). females may be kept with other females in groups of at least 3 preferably 5. this spreads out the aggression allowing for a pecking order until there is nearly no aggression.
mating
betta fish need a temp of around 82*F to mate. they should be conditioned with these temps and rich food for a week without seeing each other before mating.en they should be able to see each other but not touch each other until both are ready. the male will have a bubble nest and will be vibrant and flaring. the female will swi with her butt up and might have stripes on her. to see them mating look it up on youtube. after they breed the female leaves in the wild or must be removed if done by a breeder. the male should be removed when they are free swimming. this should be done in a tank of at least 10gallons with a sponge filter, if you wish to breed them to TONS of research first.
